vermicompost ... rich manure for tea garden

Introduction
Vermicompost is a rich manure obtained by the action of  earth worms on organic material. Composting is a process of decomposing organic matter by a microbial population in a worm and moist aerobic environment. Vermicompost is prepared in pit of different sizes on the land.

About the warms

There are more than three thousand species of worms found all over the world. They are broadly divided into three categories based on their nature of habit, feeding and defection activities  as

Epeigeic  :-     Also called surface worms of manure worms or red worms, they inhabit on the surface of the soil in the litter heaps or cow dung or any other biodegrading organic matter. They process the organic matter but are not helpful in soil processing. For example Eisenia foetida, Eudrilus Eugene , perionyse etc.

Endogeic  :-    They inhabit in mineral soil horizons and feed more on the soil than on bio-degradable organic matter. They move horizontally in the soil and are not helpful in organic matter processing but help in soil processing and also move from one place to another frequently. For example Pentoscolex  sps. Elopeius sps , Drawida sps.

Aneceic    :-     They are deep borrowing type worms and live in vertical burrows in the soil. They go deep into the soil up to 10 feet. They feed on both organic matter and soil and leave their casting at all levels of  soil in their burrows. In the night they come to soil surface for feeding and matting. They have  for exp. Polypheretima, elongata , Lampitomarutti

Type of bio-degradables  that can be converted into Vermicompost .

·        All types of semi-decomposed general compost FYM
·        All Types of agro-wastes of farms.
·        Forest litter leaf litter.
·        Cow-dung , horse dung , other animal dung.
·        Water hyacinth banana tree , leaf weed biomass etc.

There are also some things we shouldn’t feed them

·        Cetrus fruits
·        Onion and garlic
·        Meat and Chicken

Why greentop Vermi is best ?

·        It is free flowing, easy to apply, handle and store and does not have bad odour.

·        It improves soil structure, texture, aeration, and water holding capacity and prevent soil erosion.

·        It is rich in beneficial micro-flora
such as a fixers, P-Solubilizers,                                                                    cellulose decomposing micro-flora
etc. in addition to improve soil
     environment.

·        It increases the use efficiency of chemical fertilizers and it prevents nutrient losses.

·        It is free from pathogens, toxic elements, weed seeds etc.

·        It minimizes the incidence of pest and diseases.

·        It enhances the decomposition of organic matter in soil. Thereby improves C/N ratio, improving soil texture , structure .

 vermi treated LP section
·        Can replace 20% of chemical fertilizer, 15-20 % of Phosphatic fertilizers.
·        Increase the farm productivity generally 10-40% in grain yield and 15-30% in vegetable growth.

·        Activates soil biologically thereby increasing natural fertility of soil.

·        Help in stimulating plant growth in general and roots in particular as they serve various growth promoting hormones like auxin, gibberellins etc. and vitamins. It helps in better nutrient uptake and increase tolerance towards drought and moisture stress.

·        Secrets some fungicide and antibiotic like substances which reduces the incidence of various soil borne diseases. It has got antagonistic behavior against pathogens.

Components of a commercial unit

      Shed
A thatched roof shed preferably open from all sides with unpaved (katcha) floor is erected in East-West direction lengthwise to protect the site from direct sunlight.

     Vermi bed
A shed area of 100 x 25 is sufficient to accommodate 20 vermi bed 0f 20 x 3 each having 2 space in between for treatment of 20 ton of waste in a cycle of 60 to 70 days. The height of thatched roof is kept at 8 feet from the centre and 6 feet from the sides. The base of the side is raised at least 6 above ground to protect it from flooding during the rain.

Land
About  1 bigha of land will be needed to set up a Vermiculture production cum extension centre. The centre will have at least 10-12 shed each of about 180-200 sq.ft. It should also have a bore well , and pump set or watering arrangement and other equipment.

Buildings
A godown is require for finished product and a store room for raw material.

Seed stock

This is an important item requiring considerable investment. Through the worms multiply fast to give the required number over a period of 6 months to a year. It may not be wise to wait till such a time having invested on the infrastructure heavily. A Vermi bed of 15 length 3 wide and 2 feet height bed space is require 10 Kg. worms.

Fencing and road / path

The site are needs development of roads and path ways for easy movement of hand-drawn trolley/ wheel barrows for conveying the raw material and the finished products to and from the Vermi sheds. The entire area has to be fenced to prevent trespass by animal and other unwanted elements.

Project Profile

We , Maa Gosani Debi Vermicompost, have taken a new technology for production of Vermicompost which is much more effective then conventional Vermicompost. Our aim is to produce such a Vermicompost which is enriched with protein, vitamin and with high manureing value. With our new concept, we need few concentrated solution and mixture which we have applied  in production time. It enhance the worm activities and produce readily available plant nutrients, plant growth hormones, vitamins, enzymes, antibiotics and a number of beneficial micro-organism.

Vermi composting could be taken up on any scale starting from 100 tons per annum (tpa) to 1000 tpa and above. As the production is proportional to  Vermi-bed space , it is advantageous to start with less capacities and later expand the unit after gaining production experience.

Over 20 bed – 15 ft long, 3 feet  wide and 2 feet high  is estimated  to produce Vermi compost of 100 Mt tones  per annum  over 6 cycle of 60 days each annually. The beds are housed in 2500 sq. feet of open shed.

1)  Fixed Requirement :-

       a)  Shed of Vermicompost 2500 Sq. Feet
       b)  Earth worms 200 Kg.
       c)  Water Tank.

2)  Recurring Requirement ( for Single cycle, total 6 cycle in a year)
       a)  Cow dung & other wastes – 20 ton.
       b)  Concentrated solution & mixture – 5000/-
       c)  Water – as per daily requirement.
